The increasingly blurry lines between what is real and what is an artificial construct – both physically and philosophically – are the point of focus in the science fiction drama The Thirteenth Floor. In 1937, a man named Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl) gives a note to Ashton (Vincent D’Onofrio), the bartender at a swank hotel, that’s addressed to Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko). Fuller tells Ashton it’s crucial that no one else sees the note, and that the information enclosed is of great importance. Moments later, Fuller transports himself to 1998. He’s soon found murdered, and a shirt stained with Fuller’s blood is found in Hall’s apartment. Fuller and Hall both work for Intergraph Computer Systems, a cutting edge artificial intelligence firm, and the “past” Fuller was visiting was actually a stunningly realistic recreation of Los Angeles 50 years ago, complete with people you can meet and places you can visit, that exists only in a microchip. The message he left with Ashton, however, is real. Some people, including LAPD detective Larry McBain (Dennis Haysbert) believe Hall murdered Fuller to assume his position of leadership at Intergraph. Jane (Gretchen Mol), Fuller’s daughter, soon arrives on the scene, and Hall finds himself infatuated; Hall is determined to clear his name, so with the help of Whitney (also played by (Vincent D’Onofrio), he into the virtual 1937 in hopes of discovering just what happened. ow.ly The Cosmopolitan has been around, in various guises, since the 1980s. Its one of the most popularly ordered cocktails but this relatively straightforward drink is now more famous for its garnish than its ingredients. Glass: 5 oz Martini or 10oz rocks glass Method: shake & strain Ice cubes 25ml citron vodka 25ml triple sec or Cointreau 25ml cranberry juice Juice of 1 lime wedge Put all the ingredients into a mixing glass. Cap with a Boston shaker and shake vigorously for a few seconds. Double strain into a chilled Martini glass or serve on the rocks in a rocks glass. Garnish This drink probably became world famous due to its unique garnish the orange flambé. Cut a thin strip of peel from an orange, taking as little of the pith as possible. Holding the skin towards the drink, snap the peel over a lighter flame. The flame should brush the surface of the drink and the warm oils should spray over the surface, creating an instant aroma and flavour. Wipe the peel around the rim and slip into the drink. Cosmopolitan variations Metropolitan: use Absolut Kurrant vodka instead of citron vodka Purple Cosmo: use blue curaçao instead of Cointreau Fruit Cosmos: add fresh fruit or Funkin puree; berries work very well

Crying into your whiskey glass won’t get you very far… Or will it? My attempt to tell the story as Simon Le Bon had envisioned whilst writing it in his garden. I’ve been a huge fan of Duran Duran from when I was a little boy, so I couldn’t pass this one up. My father took a photograph of my brothers and I stood next to Simon Le Bon’s yacht that had moored up at a jetty in my home town – Crosshaven, Co. Cork. I wonder if he remembers?! For this piece, I wanted to use an iconic English actor from the same period Duran Duran were at their height in the 80s. Fortunately for me, veteran actor Michael Redfern, who played the dad in the long running Oxo family commercials, lived close by and he was excited to play the protagonist tormented by his troubled past. His tormentor, a ghost child played by Connor Keeley, is now a seasoned actor himself, having directed him before in a film I made last year. It’s taken many weeks to pull this together and I’ve nothing but praise for the many people who made it possible. Queenstown Heritage Center on Cork Harbor – The story of how the potato famine forced millions of Irish to leave their homeland is recounted here, the major point of departure for the emigrants.
